Bloggers beware …

Finally did something genuinely scientific about the problem with my hand … went to a physiotherapist. Turns out it’s an inflamed tendon from … blogging …

Yes, that’s right, my hours of harmless amusement at the computer have ended in pain … my space bar thumb has spaced too many bars and needs a rest …

He iced it and said it was fine to swim … if only I’d seen him earlier …

I think there’s a lesson in this for me.

So where to now?Newport Beach 20 July 2010

Have to take a break from blogging. Luckily I’m off the day after tomorrow for south west Victoria for my graduation from TAFE … it’s an Art Diploma … only took me ten years to get round to finishing my degree … better late than never …

My goal … to successfully survive the long drive and see some whales. Warrnambool is on the coast and famous for its whale watching, so in between the graduation ceremony and a week long workshop, I’ll be popping down to the beach and hoping for the best … I’ve seen a mother whale and her calf there once before, relaxing in the shallows before the long swim north …

But as the next stop from Warrnambool is Antarctica I won’t be swimming.

And I won’t have access to a computer, which may be the best thing for my hand. If I don’t have time for another post between now and my return, have a nice few days!

Similar adventure had occurred to me when i discovered and played the “Tomb raider” video game (Lara Croft’s missions). I had both hand palms + thumbs covered with blisters !
I wish you see the whales and get good thrills and maybe pictures ? Take care.

oh no! sadly, i know exactly what that pain feels like. my right hand is killing me right now. *sighs*

Ouch … Well, if it’s tendon pain, try ice and ‘Die Da Feng Shi Gao’ herbal plasters … mine were given to me by the physiotherapist … they’re dynamite … very soothing and the ice really helps … plus I wear a hand support thing that fastens with velcro, also from the physio … which reminds me not to wiggle the thumb too much …
      all the best.

maybe you should get a mouse! What does this mean for your quest to swim all year round?

Have fun – but I’m going to miss your blog. xx

Taa, I have a mouse … it’s the space bar that’s my problem … am thinking of visiting an occupational therapist for some help with typing technique …

However, I can still swim and will be back in the water soon …

      xx

Sorry to hear about your hand injury. I didn’t realise that blogging was so dangerous!
If you’re off to Antartica, have a great time. I can’t wait to see the photos!

  5. Firstly, beachblogger, congratulations on graduating with your Arts Degree. It’s a sensational moment that should be savoured and enjoyed!

I hope you are recovering well.

I’d have to agree wholeheartedly that extended and repetitive computer actions are creating tendon inflammation problems. I’m pretty sure this is the case with my right elbow, which is really, really, really sore most of the time. My thumb might be arthritis but I don’t think my elbow suffers the same fate.

Rest, certainly seems to be the best medicine although it is hard to take when it is necessary to make your living by continuous tapping of keys, not unlike Egyptian slaves rowing and rowing to the crack of the whip in the galleys …

Keep up the good work …

Maybe remember to do wrist stretches every so often. I haven’t had that…yet. I’ve typed for years. :o ) I hope your wrist gets better and I hope to see you blogging once again.

    • beachblogger says:

Thanks, yes just yesterday the physio showed me wrist stretches, and gave me a treatment and it’s a little better. I’ve been typing for years too, so this was a complete surprise …

I hope you’re feeling better, BB, I’m really missing your blog and your fabulous photos of Newport in the morning. Could you re-train your hand to press the space bar with your index finger???

    • beachblogger says:

It’s on the mend … slowly … the thumb is still strangely bent, and I’ve found a new physio who may be able to do some more for me … also awaiting the arrival of an occupational therapist to help with desk, posture etc … may get a voice activated system or something …

One problem is that I have to save the hand for other essentials like business emails, various other life tasks like shopping, driving etc … hoping to get back on the beach within the next couple of weeks. Thanx for your good wishes …
